"Outdoor" calves need less antibiotics

Calves that can spend more time outdoors are less likely to fall ill and need less antibiotics, according to a new study.

The project "The outdoor calf - a new concept for calf fattening", conducted by the Vetsuisse faculty at the University of Bern and co-funded by NRP 72, has presented some highly encouraging findings in a joint press release with project partners IP Suisse and Migros. The researchers were able to significantly reduce the use of antibiotics. Within the scope of NRP 72, they also systematically collected samples to determine levels of antibiotic resistance. This data is still being analysed, the results are expected in autumn of this year.
